In 2026, most of the new places that opened in Midtown come from people who already spent years cooking, pouring, and managing in Reno before opening their own spots. There's a Vietnamese kitchen from a man who started as a busboy, a garden bar from a bartender with two decades in local service, an Italian deli from the chef behind The Kitchen Table, and a downtown restaurant that moved into the city's best-known dining building. One more, still under construction, comes from two owners who already run restaurants around town. This fall is the first autumn most of these rooms will see.
The Summer Class, by Address
Here's who opened, where, and when.
| Spot | Address | Who's behind it | Opened |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Matchbox | 717 S. Center St., behind Bibo Coffee and Gelato | Lex Niemann | May 23, 2026 |
| The Living Room | 188 California Ave. | Maribel Garcia and Tyler Colton | June 19, 2026 |
| Four Seasons Vietnamese Kitchen | 555 S. Virginia St., No. 102 | Ken Vong | Soft-opened June 20, 2026 |
| Alioto's Focacceria | The Sticks, former Jus space | Chef Alexander Alioto | July 11, 2026 |
| Marcolino's Italia | 1555 S. Wells Ave. | Marco and Lynette Brown | Grand opening set for Jan. 10, 2026 |
The Living Room is the 1970s room on that list. KOLO's July visit with Garcia and Colton described a bar built around vinyl, cocktails, and conversation, so it's a good fit for a cold-weather evening. The other four have something in common. Their owners learned the trade in Reno, in other people's kitchens or in smaller formats of their own, before they opened in Midtown.
Ken Vong Finally Cooks His Own Food
Ken Vong's path to 555 S. Virginia St. took more than a decade. In a September 19 profile, the Reno News & Review reported that he arrived from Vietnam in the mid-2000s and worked his way up from busboy to the restaurant floor to ownership. He was first a partner in Siu Korean BBQ. Then he opened Crawfish Asian Cuisine, the Cantonese seafood-boil spot that has been part of Reno's Chinese food scene for more than ten years.
Four Seasons is the first place where he cooks the food he grew up on. The menu covers pho, banh mi, spring rolls, and the Vietnamese coffee he grew up drinking. The Reno News & Review described flavors running from his native south to the north. Pho season is coming, so this is the newcomer most likely to get busier as the weather cools.
A Deli With a San Francisco Name and a Reno Track Record
Alexander Alioto took over the former Jus space at The Sticks in July. He isn't new to Reno diners. He opened The Kitchen Table with partners in 2018, and Edible Reno-Tahoe notes that he descends from the well-known Alioto restaurant family of San Francisco. The focacceria is an Italian deli, and it opened alongside a sister restaurant of the same name planned for San Rafael, California, in August. That order is worth noting. A chef with deep Bay Area roots opened in Midtown first, or at least at the same time.
The Sticks also hosts one of the clearest dates on the October calendar, which comes up below.
The Garden Bar With No Closing Date
The Matchbox is the one opening that runs on a clock. Lex Niemann opened it on May 23 in the shaded backyard of Bibo Coffee and Gelato. The yard is planted with lavender and grapevines, and the short menu lists colorful cocktails, including one with Aperol-infused gin, plus nearly as many mocktails flavored with things like oolong tea and ginger.
Niemann started working in restaurants at 16 and has logged 20 years in the local food and bar business. She built the bar for one particular kind of guest.
"I know that there are people who want to be social and go out and feel like they're participating in maybe a bar scene, but might not feel comfortable being in a bar. People can come and hang out, get a really nice cocktail that's N/A while maybe their friends get something that has alcohol in it, and then they all kind of feel like they're still participating in the same space."
The summer schedule the Reno News & Review published in June was a four-day weekend. Hours were 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the Monday hours there for the service-industry crowd. Edible Reno-Tahoe reported that Niemann sees the bar as temporary and plans to close when porch weather ends. In June she said she wouldn't announce a closing date because patio weather might last into October or November. Check her Instagram, @thematchboxreno, for current hours before you walk over.
One later date is on the books. University of Nevada, Reno's PACK! MidTown evening on October 23 lists an ASUN Alumni Club gathering at The Matchbox.
Marcolino's Moves Into 1977
Marcolino's Italia is the oldest name in this group and the newest occupant of the oldest building. The restaurant left 254 W. First St. downtown for the former Rapscallion building at Wells Avenue and Vesta Street. Rapscallion closed during the pandemic. In January, 2News reported that the restaurant had moved into the building and set its grand opening for Saturday, January 10, at 11 a.m. The restaurant's own site now takes reservations at 1555 S. Wells Ave.
Owner Marco Brown told 2News the move was personal.
"It's the most iconic building in our city's history. Everyone knows this going way back to 1977 when the Rapscallion first opened, and so after all those years and then them shutting down, and me being able to take it over in my name is pretty cool."
The growth is the clearest example of the veteran pattern. General Manager Bill Green said the Marcolino's food truck brought in $280,000 in its first five months. The new building has three private dining rooms, two kitchens, and a private parking lot with no meters, which lets the restaurant serve both lunch and dinner and take on more catering. The building opened under its new name in the middle of winter. That makes this fall its first chance at holiday parties and private dinners in those three rooms.
Two More Behind the Fencing
The places still under construction come from the same kind of operator. Sofia is a chef-driven restaurant with a global menu going into the former LuLou's space. Its partners are Rene Preciado, who owns Mexcal, and Sergio Romero, who owns La Condesa. Together they already run Toro Bravo and Karajillo Coffee Co. As of August 16, 2026, This Is Reno described Sofia as "on the horizon."
EZ Pot & Skewers Bar is planned for 681 S. Virginia St., the former Finbomb space. The owners are Qianwen Liu, Zewen Qing, and Chanpong Tan, and the most recent update lists the official opening date as still to be determined. Neither project had a firm opening date in its latest coverage.
Where the October Calendar Lands
Several of this year's newcomers sit near the month's clearest dates.
- Thursday, Oct. 1: Midtown's monthly First Thursday. The district describes it as merchants hosting in-store events, food and beverage sampling, local art, and live music.
- Sunday, Oct. 11, noon to 3 p.m.: Free Country Brunch line dancing at Reno Public Market, 299 E. Plumb Lane.
- Friday, Oct. 16, 7 to 10 p.m.: The Sugar Thieves, with Kat Heart opening, at Reno Public Market.
- Saturday, Oct. 17, 5 to 9 p.m.: Lip Sync Legends, a fundraiser for Vitality Unlimited, at Reno Public Market.
- Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6 to 9 p.m.: R&B Bingo with Mo Ayala at Reno Public Market.
- Friday, Oct. 23, 5:30 p.m.: UNR's PACK! MidTown, with alumni chapters meeting at participating businesses, The Matchbox among them.
- Saturday, Oct. 24, 7 to 10 p.m.: JC Smith Band at Reno Public Market.
- Friday, Oct. 30, 5 to 7:30 p.m.: Trick or Treat at the Sticks, organized by Mari Chuy's Midtown at 764 S. Virginia St., with a scavenger hunt through local shops, treats, games, and a costume contest.
- Saturday, Oct. 31, noon to 3 p.m.: Free Kids Crafts, "Doodle Your Soul," at Reno Public Market.
The Sticks event on October 30 brings families to the same complex where Alioto's Focacceria opened in July, so it will be the deli's first Halloween. The PACK! MidTown evening falls a week earlier, and it's the last confirmed date for The Matchbox's garden while Niemann waits to see how long the porch weather lasts.
New restaurants on a block change how the block feels day to day, and they change how a home nearby fits into daily life.
